The Strategic Predesign Association

The Strategic Predesign Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge and practice of Strategic Predesign.  The Association brings together owners and owner representatives, real estate and workplace professionals, planners, programmers, architects, engineers, project managers, consultants, technology specialists, researchers, faculty, students, and other stakeholders involved in shaping the built environment.  Our purpose is to improve the decisions made before design begins—when organizations are defining needs, evaluating alternatives, testing feasibility, aligning stakeholders, establishing requirements, and determining how best to invest limited resources.  By strengthening the Strategic Predesign process, the Association seeks to improve delivery quality, reduce uncertainty and risk, increase value, and achieve better outcomes for owners, users, organizations, and communities.

Connecting Disciplines That Have Historically Worked Apart

Many of the most important decisions affecting real estate, workplace, and capital projects occur across disciplines that have traditionally operated independently.  The Strategic Predesign Association helps bridge these historically compartmentalized groups by creating opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, research, and professional development.  Through this multidisciplinary approach, the Association works to identify recurring end user challenges, improve decision-making processes, and advance best practices, tools, techniques, digital workflows, and emerging technologies that support better project outcomes.  We pursue this mission through networking and active member participation in committees, roundtables, workshops, conferences, research initiatives, publications, and continuing education programs.

What the Association Does

The Association undertakes educational, research, and professional activities that support the advancement of Strategic Predesign, including:

  • Advancing public understanding of Strategic Predesign and the value of informed, evidence-based decision-making before design begins.

  • Conducting conferences, workshops, roundtables, and forums that bring together owners, practitioners, educators, researchers, students, and technology leaders.

  • Sponsoring and supporting research focused on improving predesign processes, methods, tools, decision support, and project outcomes.

  • Providing continuing education and professional development for individuals and organizations involved in Strategic Predesign.

  • Developing publications and digital resources including research reports, case studies, guides, tools, templates, benchmarks, educational materials, and emerging-practice resources.

  • Exploring digital workflows, data analytics, and artificial intelligence applications that can improve information gathering, analysis, collaboration, scenario evaluation, and decision-making.

  • Encouraging collaboration among academia and practice to identify emerging challenges, develop research priorities, and accelerate the transfer of knowledge into practice.

  • Supporting the development of best practices and shared methods that can improve consistency, transparency, and effectiveness across the Strategic Predesign process.

  • Seeking donations, sponsorships, grants, and institutional support to fund research, education, publications, events, digital resources, and other Association initiatives.

Get Involved

The Strategic Predesign Association is a member-driven organization. Its programs and initiatives depend on the knowledge, experience, interests, and participation of its members.  Members can contribute in many ways—whether by sharing professional expertise, supporting research, helping organize events, developing educational programs, contributing publications and resources, or helping guide the future direction of the Association.  Members may also serve as officers, members of the Board of Directors, or participants in Association committees.

Help Define the Future of Predesign

The Association provides a forum for people from different disciplines to learn from one another, contribute knowledge, test new ideas, conduct research, and improve the processes used to make consequential decisions before design begins.  Whether you participate in a committee, contribute to a research initiative, attend a roundtable, develop an educational program, share a case study, or help lead the Association, your involvement can help advance Strategic Predesign as a recognized and increasingly important professional discipline.

Connect. Learn. Contribute. Lead.

Committee Workflow

Communications creates awareness → Membership converts contacts into members → Events engages them → Continuing Education develops them → Research creates knowledge → Knowledge preserves and distributes it → Partner Development funds and connects the system → Technology enables the entire ecosystem → Executive Committee coordinates it and monitors performance through the Dashboard.
